listening - unsettling

on Sunday 27th March, I was invited to be on the live radio at 4zzz.

The show is Rusted Satellites and Cieon and Kurt’s select is always interesting and some familiar faces

have been on the show to perform.

Anyway, I had a pleasure of sharing music of my friends back from Japan.

My selections were

Cheekbone - Slower Eastwind

Gen Tanabe - Yaora (excerpt)

Akira Uchida - kumo ma no hikari

Then my new piece that I just released today on Piano Day 2022.

short scene has two pieces of music, Title track is like an intro to the second piece, unsettling which was played on air on Sunday. Thank you Cieon! It was surreal to be listening to my piece in a radio station, before the release.

“unsettling” is an improvised piece that I recorded fairly recently.

You can possibly feel the pause and that’s when my thinking comes in.

Other than that, I let my fingers play wherever they want to go but I can hear the sound in my head in 0.001 second before my fingers actually hit the bottom of the keys ( or I should say the hammers reach strings?) While I am in the zone, I am fully there.

It used to bother me all sorts of sounds and that annoyed me. I needed the silence. I was wanting silence, wanting the silence to make me peaceful but I was wrong.

Over the years, with the meditation, counseling, all sorts of stuff I do, I have the silence in me and the noise does not matter to me. I am becoming friends with noise but still have silence/peace within me.

So we left the water dripping sounds in the recording if you caught it. and there are some traffic noise but that is where exactly I record - home and honest sound that I play with.

Recorded and mixed Paul Crampton
